April 10/11, 1943

    24 Halifaxes from 405, 408, and 419 Squadrons were joined by 94 Wellingtons from 420, 424, 425, 426, 427, 428, 429, and 431 Squadrons on an attack at Frankfurt. The crews were over the target at between 12,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 120,000 lbs of high explosives and 189,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, the target was cloud covered and the attack was scattered.

    Sgt J. Phillips from 405 Squadron was hit by flak, not serious.
    Sgt D. Crockatt and crew flying Halifax II JB-920 coded LQ-F were attacked by an ME-109, there was no damage or claim.

    P/O L. Ainsworth and crew from 419 Squadron flying Halifax II DT-672 coded VR-D were attacked by an ME-109, there was no claim or damage.
    P/O T. Jackson and crew flying Halifax II JB-912 coded VR-B were attacked by a JU-88, there was no claim or damage.

    F/Sgt R. Taylor from 420 Squadron returned early as the over load tank was u/s.
    P/O B. Campbell returned early as the port engine was u/s. They landed safely on one engine at West Malling.
    Sgt J. Easson returned early as the stbd engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on one engine.
    Sgt L. Horahan returned early as the rear gunner was sick.
    F/O R. Gourlie landed at Ridgewell on return.
    Sgt G. Hall landed at West Malling on return.
    P/O C. Jackson RCAF and crew, flying Wellington X HE-422 coded PT-Q, bailed out on return.

    All landed safely except the pilot, who drowned.

    W/O2 R. Buie RCAF and crew, flying Wellington X HE-159 coded QB-P, had some serious engine problems.

    The rear gunner was able to bail out at 600 feet and the rest of the crew were killed when they crashed near Rolvenden.

    Sgt F. Turcotte from 425 Squadron landed at West Malling on return.
    Sgt P. Bujold landed at West Malling on return due to a fuel shortage.
    F/O J. Michaud and crew flying Wellington X HE-423 coded KW-A were attacked by an unidentified twin engine enemy aircraft, there was no claim or damage.

    S/Ldr F. Parker from 426 Squadron returned without bombing as they did not see any T.I’s.
    P/O L. Merrifield was hit by flak, not serious.
    P/O J. Sammet RCAF and crew, flying Wellington X HE-652 coded OW-H, failed to return from this operation.

    Sgt W. Harris from 428 Squadron returned early as the pilot was sick. P/O D. Ferry RCAF, the bomb aimer flew the Wellington back and landed at base safely.
    Sgt D. Shears returned early as the stbd engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on one engine.
    W/O2 D. Thompson returned early as the electrical system was u/s. They landed at Downham Market.
    Sgt R. Parkinson, Sgt M. Chepil, W/O1 A. Harrison, Sgt T. Sylvester and F/Lt D. Morgan landed at West Malling on return.
    Sgt C. Whitfield landed at Middle Wallop on return.
    Sgt A. Hatch landed at Bradwell Bay on return.

    Sgt S. Bruce from 429 Squadron returned early as the port engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on one engine.
    F/Sgt G. Kilburn and crew flying Wellington III BK-162 coded AL-B were attacked by a JU-88, there was no claim or damage.
    Sgt R. Ellison and F/Sgt T. Heyes landed at West Malling on return.
    F/Sgt K. Mills and crew flying Wellington X HE-160 coded AL-R were attacked by an ME-109, there was no claim or damage. They landed Farnborough on return.
    W/O D. Jefferis RAF and crew flying, Wellington X HE-636 coded AL-Q, failed to return from this operation.

    Sgt G. Wood returned early after they were hit by flak, there were holes in the tail, fuselage and wings.
    Sgt R. Sullivan landed at Hurn on return.
    Sgt W. Bidmead RAF–POW and crew, flying Wellington X HE-213 coded SE-F, failed to return from this operation.
