April 4/5, 1943



    23 Halifaxes from 405, 408, and 419 Squadrons were joined by 119 Wellingtons from 420, 424, 425, 426, 427, 428, 429, and 431 Squadrons on an attack at Kiel. The crews were over the target at between 14,500 and 19,000 feet, releasing 127,000 lbs of high explosives and 328,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, the target was cloud covered and bombing was scattered.

    P/O R. Symes and crew from 405 Squadron flying Halifax II JB-875 coded LQ-S were attacked by a JU-88, many strikes were seen around the port wing and engine, the wing caught fire and blew off, with the aircraft crashing to the ground. They  attacked Haderslav because 3 crew members were sick from lack of oxygen.
    F/Sgt W. Foley RCAF and crew, flying Halifax II  DT-704 coded LQ-H, failed to return from this operation.

    F/Sgt F.Leaver from 408 Squadron returned early as the navigation aids were u/s.
    P/O A. Grant and crew flying Halifax II HR-658 coded EQ-V were attacked by an ME-110, there was no claim or damage.
    Sgt B. Milligan returned early as the rear turret was u/s.
    S/Ldr E. Gilmore RCAF and crew, flying Halifax II   BB-336 coded EQ-O, failed to return from this operation.

    6 crew were killed and one POW after being shot down by flak.

    Sgt A. Green from 419 Squadron returned early as the mid upper gunner, Sgt J. Therrien RCAF, was unconscious.

    Sgt J. Mason from 420 Squadron returned early as the stbd engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on one engine.
    P/O W. Walkinshaw and crew flying Wellington X MS-479 coded PT-F were attacked by an unidentified enemy aircraft, some strikes were seen.
    Sgt L. Horahan returned early as the port engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on one engine.

    F/Sgt H. Mayer from 424 Squadron returned early as the port engine was u/s.
    Sgt R. Hewitt returned early as the pilot was sick.
    Sgt S. Atkinson and Sgt L. Wilson were hit by flak, not serious.
    Sgt B. Sorge and crew flying Wellington X HE-656 coded QB-L were attacked by a JU-88, there was no claim or damage.
    P/O L. Copenhaver landed at Coltishall on return due to a fuel shortage.
    Sgt W. Grigg landed at Lissett on return due to a fuel shortage.
    F/Sgt J. Ryan landed at East Moor on return due to a fuel shortage.

    F/Sgt C. Spooner from 425 Squadron was hit by flak, there were holes in the stbd wing and fuselage.
    Sgt F. Turcotte overshot the runway on landing, both propellers were broken and the nose damaged.
    Sgt J. Michaud, Sgt J. Rivard, P/O J. Delisle, Sgt E. Carvajal, Sgt D. Turrene, P/O R. Lacerte, P/O T. Doucette, S/Ldr J. Savard, P/O R. Smith, P/O R. Clinton, W/O2 J. Marcotte, Sgt J. Brousseau, F/Sgt J. Smith and P/O G. Anderson landed at Acklington on return.

    Sgt F. Dingwall from 426 Squadron returned early as they were late taking off.
    Sgt B. Cox landed at Acklington on return.
    S/Ldr F. Parker and crew flying Wellington III BK-440 coded OW-V were attacked by an unidentified single engine enemy aircraft, there was no claim or damage.
    P/O D. Kennedy RCAF and crew, flying Wellington III   X-3699 coded OW-Q,  was hit by flak just before the target, the rear turret was damaged. They then turned for home and found that a light was on that could not be turned off. This attracted a JU-88 which attacked the Wellington. The hydraulics were damaged and the bomb doors opened. About 5 minutes from the coast, both engines quit and they ditched hard into the North Sea and broke up. P/O D. Laskey RCAF, the wireless operator, and Sgt L. Anderson RCAF, the bomb aimer, were able to get to the dinghy, but were not able to turn it over. They tried to paddle over to where P/O K. Walley the navigator and F/Sgt C. Beaton RCAF, the rear gunner, were calling. After about 4 and a half hours a destroyer was able to pick them up. Sadly the pilot, navigator, and rear gunner perished.

    Sgt H. Green from 427 Squadron returned early as one engine was u/s.
    Sgt J. Milton returned early as the intercom was u/s.
    Sgt M. Summers was hit by flak, there was a large hole near the tail.

    Sgt D. Shears from 428 Squadron returned early as the stbd engine was u/s.
    F/Lt W. Suggitt and crew flying Wellington III X-3550 coded NA-J were attacked by an ME-110, there was no claim or damages. They landed at Thornaby on return.
    Sgt N. Chepil and crew flying Wellington X HE-176 coded NA-F were attacked by an ME-109, many strikes were seen and it burst into flames, falling to the ground. It was claimed destroyed. They landed at Thornaby on return.
    Sgt W. Harris saw a Wellington at 23.50 at 16,000 feet, explode in mid air and fall to the ground. They landed at Thornaby on return.
    S/Ldr F. Bowden hit a balloon over the target, there was some damage to the port wing.
    P/O P. Manning landed at Middleton St. George on return.
    All other crews landed at Thornaby on return. 
    F/Lt R. Tighe RCAF and crew, flying Wellington X HE-432 coded NA-C, failed to return from this operation.

    F/Lt A. Chipling from 429 Squadron returned early with technical difficulties.
    F/Sgt R. Conroy returned early as the doors were torn off the rear turret.
    W/O D. Jefferis was attacked by an enemy aircraft, there was no claim or damage. They landed safely at Catfoss on return.

    Sgt W. Bidmead from 431 squadron returned early as the radios were u/s.
    Sgt R. Sullivan returned early as the stbd engine was u/s.
    Sgt R. Barclay returned early as one engine was u/s.
    Sgt J. Reynoldson landed at Donna Nook on return.
    Sgt W. Eaglesham and F/Lt. C.Hall landed at Lissett on return.
    Sgt A. Smith landed at Catfoss on return.
