August 29/30, 1944
36 Lancasters from 419 and 428 squadron were ordered to attack Stettin.
The crews were over the target at 18,000 feet, releasing 106,000 lbs of
high explosives and 206,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports the
target was well hit with some ships in the harbour being sunk.
F/O F. Bruyns from 419 Squadron had the stbd outer u/s on the return
trip. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
F/O G. Sheahan was hit by flak, port outer was u/s. They landed safely
at base on 3 engines.
1st/Lt J. Hartshorn was hit by flak, the stbd inner caught fire. They
returned safely to base on 3 engines.
F/O L. Sparling and crew, flying Lancaster X KB-769 coded VR-I, was
attacked by a JU-88. There was no damage and the JU-88 was claimed damaged.
F/O G. Holmes was hit by flak. There were holes in the port fuselage
and an 18 inch slash near the mid-upper turret.
P/O R. Mansfield was hit by incendiaries. The port outer was u/s and
caught fire. Sgt B. Jigursky RCAF, the mid-upper gunner bailed out over
the target. The crew returned safely to base.
P/O A. Cohen and crew, flying Lancaster X KB-781 coded NA-U, borrowed
from 428 Squadron was attacked twice by an ME-109. There was no claim or
damage.
F/Lt E. Graham and crew from 428 Squadron, flying Lancaster X KB-778
coded NA-Y, was attacked by a JU-88. There was no claim or damage.
F/O L. Plunkett, RCAF ,
and crew failed to return from this operation.
