W/O2 J. James -- 433 Squadron
While on operations to Stuttgart on February 20/21,1944, Halifax III HX-282 coded BM-K flown by W/O2 J. James from 433 Squadron, was attacked by unidentified single engine fighter.
       
While in the target area, they encountered a single engine aircraft. It was sighted by Sgt C. Schade, the mid upper gunner, at a height of 21,000 feet and 04:05, speed 180 mph on a course of 008 degrees.
       
The enemy aircraft was first sighted on the starboard quarter up, flying a parallel course at about 800 yards. The enemy aircraft turned in and the mid upper gunner instructed the pilot to corkscrew starboard. Sgt J. Bretsch, the rear gunner fired a short burst and the fighter was lost. The enemy aircraft did not open fire. The rear gunner fires about 80 rounds with two stoppages. There was no claim.
