While entering the target area of Brest on Jan 6/7,1944, Halifax II JP-119 coded VR-O, of 419 squadron at 48:23N-04:33W, flying at 15,000 feet and airspeed of 202 mph at 21:11 hrs was attacked by an ME-109. The monica was u/s.

The ME-109 was first sighted by Sgt R. Dujay, the rear gunner, in the dark position, port quarter down at 600 yards, commencing his attack and positioning himself dead astern. Sgt R. Dujay gave the cork screw port and opened fire at 400 yards with a 75 round burst and then the 4 guns packed up.

Sgt Dujay was not sure of the position of the stoppages. The ME-109 broke off the attack on the stbd quarter at 200 yards and then was lost from the gunners view. Sgt Dujay then gave the resume course. The second attack came after the Halifax had finished mining, by an ME-109, probably the same one.

This attack came at 48:19N-04:20W at a height of 13,000 feet, airspeed 197 mph at 21:14 hrs. The ME-109 was sighted by Sgt Dujay on the port quarter down at 600 yards, commencing his attack and positioning himself dead astern. Sgt Dujay gave the cork screw port and the ME-109 was lost from view. The rear gunner then gave the resume course. At the time of attack, visibility was good with a half moon on the stbd bow. There were no search lights, flak or fighter flares. There was no cloud or visual ground aid. There was no damage to the Halifax and no strikes seen on the ME-109.
