6 Halifaxes from 408 and 419 Squadrons were joined by 15 Wellingtons from 424, 427, 428, and 429 Squadrons on a mining operation to the Frisian Islands. The crews were over the garden at between 700 and 2,000 feet, sowing 27@1500 lb mines.
Sgt R. Harrison from 419 Squadron hit a tree on takeoff. The port wing, propellers, and engine cowlings were damaged. The port outer engine quit, the load was jettisoned, and the crew landed safely at base on 3 engines.
Sgt L. Straight from 428 Squadron returned without mining as they could
not find the pinpoint due to poor weather.
Sgt E. Willey, Sgt G. Debussac, F/O B. Rawson, and Sgt S. Hanan from
429 Squadron returned without mining as they could not find the pinpoint
due to poor weather.
