February 21/22, 1945

    102 Halifaxes from 408, 415, 420, 425, 426, 427, 429, and 432 Squadrons were ordered on an attack at Worms. The crews were over the target at between 17,000 and 19,000 feet, releasing 224,000 lbs of high explosives and 387,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports severe damage was caused.

    S/Ldr R. Norris from 408 Squadron was hit by flak, not serious.
    W/O1 R. Craven and crew, flying Halifax VII NP-742 coded EQ-U, were attacked by an unidentified single engine enemy aircraft, there was no damage or claim.
    F/Lt D. Sanderson RCAF and crew, flying Halifax VII NP-711 coded EQ-O, failed to return from this operation.

    F/O A. Galley and W/O2 L. Russell from 415 squadron were hit by flak, not serious.

    P/O R. Bagnell and crew from 420 Squadron, flying Halifax III NR-290 coded PT-K, were attacked by an unidentified single engine enemy aircraft. Strikes were seen and it was claimed probable as it was on fire.
    P/O E. Cole landed at Mendlesham Heath on return as the hydraulics were u/s.

    F/O A. Davies from 426 Squadron was hit by flak, not serious.
    F/Lt A. Jones landed at Carnaby on return.

    11 crews from 427 Squadron departed base at between 16:19 and 16:47 hours, they were over the target at between 20:36 and 20:42 hours, returning to base at between 23:32 and 23:59 hours


    F/Lt G. Tegerdine and crew flying Halifax III MZ-452 coded ZL-E attacked an ME-110 in the target area while flying at 18,000 feet at 20:42 hours. It was clear with the moon on the starboard beam. There was searchlight, flak and flares all working at the same time. The fighter was seen attacking another Halifax on the port quarter up.

    No combat manoeuvre was taken by the other Halifax and as the fighter was breaking off its attack on the port quarter up and climbing, it over flew this Halifax. Both gunners opened fire on it underside with many strikes seen on the fuselage and starboard engine of the ME-110. The fighter then jettisoned more red flares and flew out of sight. It was claimed as damaged.


    F/Lt W. Towne and crew flying Halifax III RG-347 coded ZL-G were damaged by flak in the target area while flying at 17,300 feet, it was not serious. They were also attacked at position 49:35N-08:15E while flying at 17,300 feet on the homeward journey at 20:40 hours by an unidentified enemy aircraft. The weather was clear, no cloud with the moon directly above. It was first seen by the rear gunner making an attack from the starboard quarter. The fighter then passed to the port quarter, where the rear gunner opened fire. It dipped its wing and came in astern, many strikes were seen on the enemy aircraft and it caught fire and dove to the ground, it was claimed as destroyed.


    F/O F. Kaye and crew, flying Halifax III MZ-755 coded ZL-R, were attacked by a unidentified single engine aircraft, many strikes were seen and it burst into flames and broke in two pieces, it was claimed destroyed.

    F/Lt C. Pope and crew from 429 Squadron, flying Halifax III NR-230 coded AL-H, were attacked by an FW-190, strikes were seen and it rolled on its back and exploded, a parachute was also seen. It was claimed as destroyed.
    F/O L. Morrison and crew, flying Halifax III MZ-318 coded AL-F, were attacked by a unidentified single engine aircraft, there was no claim or damage.
    F/O R. Scott and crew,, flying Halifax III LW-139 coded AL-P, were attacked by a JU-88, there was no claims or damage.

    F/Lt J. Wallace from 432 squadron was hit by flak, not serious.
    P/O R. Bradley RCAF–POW and crew, flying Halifax VII NP-803 coded QO-I, failed to return from this operation.

    While the Halifaxes were attacking Worms, 82 Lancasters from 419, 424, 428, 431, and 434 Squadrons were ordered on an attack at Duisberg. The crews were over the target at between 16,000 and 19,500 feet, releasing 333,000 lbs of high explosives and 389,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, bombing was concentrated and severe damage was caused.

    F/Lt J. Thomas and crew from 424 Squadron, flying Lancaster I NG-457 coded QB-C, were attacked by a unknown aircraft, there was no damage. 
    P/O D. Saunders and crew, flying Lancaster I NN-780 coded QB-Y, were attacked by an unidentified single engine enemy aircraft, there were no claim or damage, although some strikes were seen.
    F/Lt D. Sillers and crew, flying Lancaster I RA-507 coded QB-S, were attacked by a JU-88, W/O2 G. Smith RCAF, the wireless operator was slightly injured by a cannon shell.

    F/Lt R. Hay and crew from 428 Squadron, flying Lancaster X KB-820 coded NA-M, were attacked by an unidentified enemy aircraft, there was no claim or damage.

    P/O J. Lourie and crew from 431 Squadron, flying Lancaster X KB-819 coded SE-J, were attacked by an unidentified enemy aircraft, there was no claim or damage.

    F/O W. Simpson from 433 Squadron was late over the target as the stbd inner was u/s. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
