January 29/30, 1943
22 Halifaxes from 408 and 419 Squadrons were joined
by 40 Wellingtons from 420, 424, 425, 426, and 427 Squadrons on an attack
on the dock area of Lorient. This attack took place with the crews over
the target at between 11,000 and 19,000 feet dropping 90,000 lbs of high
explosives and 100,000 lbs of incendiaries. The crews encountered severe
icing and bad weather over the target. Bombing was scattered.
Sgt D. Childers of 408 Squadron returned early
the gee box was u/s.
F/Sgt D. Smith returned early as they were using
too much fuel.
Sgt A. Cochrane and crew flying Halifax II DT-676
coded EQ-B were in a combat
with a JU-88, there was no claim or damages.
F/Sgt A. Ross encountered severe icing, the stbd
inner quit, as well as some instruments. They landed safely at Squires
Gate.
Sgt E. Sirett had the port inner quit due to
icing. They landed safely at Colerne.
F/Sgt F. Wood had the stbd outer and port inner
quit due to icing after releasing the load, aircraft lost 5,000 feet in
a flat spin. The Flt/engineer was able to restart the engines and they
landed safely at Syerston due to a fuel shortage.

an unidentified aircraft. Evasive action was taken but caused a fuel shortage.
They then returned to base, the aircraft turned out to be a Beaufighter.

P/O M. McLaughlin returned early as the oxygen
system was u/s.
Sgt J. MacKenzie returned early as the navigation
aids were u/s.
Sgt L. Bakewell returned early. Stbd inner was
u/s, they landed safely at base on 3 engines.
Sgt B. Lavasseur returned early, port inner was
u/s, they landed safely at base on 3 engines.

Wellington III BJ-658 coded QB-Q were involved in combat
with 5 unidentified enemy aircraft after leaving the target, there was
no claim or damage. The crew returned safely to Chipping Warden.
Sgt B. Dugas returned early due to the port engine
being u/s.
Sgt E. Cox returned early due to his port engine
being u/s.
Sgt G. Bain landed at Moreton-in-the-Marsh due
to bad weather.
F/Sgt L. Copenhaver landed at Lulsgate Bottom
due to bad weather.
Sgt A. Grout landed at Exeter due to bad weather.
F/O G. Amies was hit by flak over the target,
they returned safely, landing at Chipping Warden.
Sgt P. Heden landed on return at Exeter as the
port engine was running poorly.
Sgt R. Buie RCAF and crew, flying Wellington
III BK-436 coded QB-P, was hit by flak over the target. Aircraft
went into a spin losing 10,000 feet. The escape hatch blew off on the way
down. Sgt Buie was covered in dust and blood and his hands were frozen.
The crew made their way back to England and then discovered that they had
only 50 gallons of fuel left.

The crew all bailed out safely with the plane crashing
near Winterslow.
F/Sgt C. Spooner of 425 Squadron returned early
as the port engine and oxygen system was u/s. They landed safely at base.
Sgt F. Smith returned early as the gee box was
u/s.
Sgt J. Delisle returned early as the radios were
u/s.
Sgt M. Perron returned early as the oxygen system
was u/s.
Sgt F. Turcotte returned early as the intercom
was u/s.
F/Sgt A. Jackson and crew, flying Wellington
III X-3648 coded KW-R, were in combat
with a JU-88 at 20:20 just after crossing the French coast near Lorient.
Sgt G. Chaput gave the dive port and opened fire. There were no strikes
seen and they were not damaged. The JU-88 was not seen again. They landed
at St. Eval on return due to bad weather.
Sgt H. Rands of 426 Squadron returned early as
the navigational aids were u/s.
W/O2 P. Maries returned early as they encountered
severe icing.
P/O J. McNeill returned to base early as the
encountered severe icing losing 9,000 feet of altitude in a spin.
Sgt J. Gauthier landed at Topcliffe on return
due to a fuel shortage.
Sgt G. Vandekerchkove from 427 Squadron returned
early as the rear guns were u/s.
As well as the crews that went to Lorient, 420
Squadron sent 4 crews on a mining operation. 2 @ 1,500 lb mines were sown
from 900 feet.
F/Lt R. Cook returned to base as they could not
find the pinpoint.
P/O S. Dunn returned to base as they could not
find the pinpoint.
F/Lt L. Anderson could not find the pinpoint
and landed at Colerne.
