January 27/28, 1944



    49 Lancasters from 408, 426, and 432 squadron were ordered on an attack at Berlin. The crews were over the target at between 20,000 and 24,000 feet, releasing 188,000 lbs of high explosives and 56,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, the target was cloud covered and bombing was scattered.

    Sgt F. Smitton from 408 Squadron returned early as the radios and intercom were u/s.
    P/O R. Lloyd was hit by flak, not serious. They landed at Bury St.Edmonds on return.
    F/O W. Fulton landed at Lakenheath due to a fuel shortage.
    W/Cdr D. Jacobs and crew, flying Lancaster II DS-726 coded EQ-Y, were attacked by an ME-110, at this moment their port outer caught fire and had to be shut down, there was no damage but some strikes were seen on the ME-110. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    W/O2 D. Harvey and crew, flying Lancaster II DS-692 coded EQ-S, were attacked by an ME-110, many strikes were seen and the ME-110 caught fire and crashed to the ground.
    S/Ldr C. Smith RCAF and crew, flying Lancaster II  DS-710 coded EQ-A, failed to return from this operation.

    F/Lt J. H. Cooper was attacked by an enemy aircraft. There was no claim or damage. They landed at Wratting Common on return.
    P/O W. Meaden was attacked by an ME-110, there was no claim or damage. They landed at Wratting Common on return.
    F/O D. Von Laufer landed at Middle Wallop on return.
