January 12/13, 1945

    12 Halifaxes from 424, 427, 429, and 433 squadrons were ordered on a mining operation to Flensburg Harbour. The crews were over the garden at 15,000 feet, sowing 44@1500 lb. mines.

    F/O M. Grant, RCAF and crew from 424 squadron,flying Halifax III LV-998, coded QB-Y, failed to return from this operation.

    6 crew members were killed and one was a POW.

    F/O A. Mackie, RCAF and crew, flying Halifax III MZ-805, coded QB-X, failed to return from this operation.

    All the crew were killed.

    F/O F. Biddell from 429 squadron returned early as the navigation aids were u/s.
    F/lt R. Mitchell and crew, flying Halifax III NA-201 coded AL-W, were attacked by a JU-88. Many strikes were seen and the JU-88 caught fire, dove through the clouds in flames. It was claimed destroyed.
    F/Lt. A. Milner, RCAF--POW and crew, flying Halifax III NR-173, coded AL-D, failed to return from this operation. A radio message was received that they were bailing out.
