January 5/6, 1945


    133 Halifaxes from 408, 415, 420, 424, 425, 426, 427, 429, 432, and 433 squadrons were joined by 57 Lancasters from 419, 428, 431, and 434 squadrons on an attack at Hannover. The crews were over the target at between 18,000 to 20,000 feet, releasing 1,587,000 lbs of high explosives. According to reports, bombing was scattered through out the city.

    F/Lt. D. Sanderson from 408 squadron had the stbd outer go u/s on the return trip. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.

    F/O P. Griffiths from 419 squadron,RCAF flying Lancaster X KB-722, coded VR-A, was hit by flak, there were holes in both wings and fuselage.
    P/O N. Mallen RCAF and crew, flying Lancaster X KB-722 coded VR-A, was outbound at 20,000 feet when they were fired upon by a cork screwing Lancaster. Minutes later both inner engines caught fire. The load was jettisoned and they turned for home. They tried to go to Brussels and then Juvincourt but the weather was poor. P/O Mallen saw a gap in the clouds, and belly landed in a field near Guise.

    The Lancaster was written off but the crew survived with some cuts and bruises.

    P/O E. Clarke from 420 Squadron was hit by flak, holes in stbd wing. 
    F/Lt V. Glover and crew, flying Halifax III NR-183 coded PT-M, were attacked by an unidentified twin engine enemy aircraft, there was no claim or damage..
    F/Lt. L. Brand, RCAF and crew flying Halifax III MZ-471, coded PT-V, failed to return from this operation.

    F/O J. Wadleigh and crew from 426 Squadron, flying Halidax VII LW-201 coded OW-D, were attacked by an ME-110, there was no claim or damage although some strikes were seen.
    F/O D. Hamilton and crew, flying Halifax III NA-204 coded OW-N, were attacked twice by jet aircraft and were followed by another, both attacking jets were seen to be hit many times and blowup in midair. Both were claimed destroyed.

    S/Ldr. B. Crew, RCAF  and crew from 427 squadron, flying Halifax III NR-257, coded ZL-Y, failed to return from this operation.

    F/O M. Ages and crew from 429 Squadron, flying Halifax III LV-830 coded AL-Q, were attacked by a JU-88,some strikes were seen.
    P/O G. Hay, RCAF and crew, flying Halifax III LV-964, coded AL-T, failed to return from this operation.

    P/O W. Weitendorf was hit by flak, there were holes in the fuselage, port rudder, both wings, and an air bottle exploded. They landed safely at Woodbridge.

    F/O N. Patterson from 432 squadron was hit by flak, there were holes in the stbd fuselage and bomb bay.
    F/Lt J. Thompson and crew, flying Halifax VII NP-705 coded QO-Y, were attacked by a JU-88, there was no claim or damage, although some strikes were seen.
    F/Lt. J. Sales, RCAF and crew flying Halifax VII NP-759, coded QO-C, failed to return from this operation.

    F/Sgt H. Batty and crew, flying Halifax III NP-937 coded BM-P, were attacked by an unidentified twin engine enemy aircraft, there was no claim or damage.
    F/Lt R. Bertran landed at Carnaby on return due to the brakes being u/s.
