March  29/30, 1943

    22 Halifaxes from 405, 408, and 419 Squadrons were ordered on an attack at Berlin. The crews were over the target at between 16,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 14,000 lbs of high explosives and 21,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, the weather was poor, with severe icing. Bombing was scattered over the target.

    P/O R. Symes of 405 Squadron returned early, as the rear turret was u/s and severe icing.

    All crews from 408 Squadron reported severe icing to and from the target.

    While the Halifaxes went to Berlin, 70 Wellingtons from 420, 424, 425, 426, 427, 428, 429, and 431 Squadrons were ordered on an attack at Bochum. The crews were over the target at between 14,000 and 19,000 feet, releasing 107,000 lbs of high explosives and 85,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, the target was cloud covered and bombing was scattered.

    P/O S. Dunn from 420 Squadron reurned early as the instruments were u/s.
    Sgt E. Way was hit by flak, the rear turret was damaged.
    Sgt J. Easson and crew flying Wellington X MS-480 coded PT-X were attacked by a JU-88, some strikes were seen.
    W/O G. Tubman landed at Driffield on return due to a fuel shortage.
    Sgt R. Brandow RCAF and crew, flying Wellington III X-3814 coded PT-P, failed to return from this operation.

    F/Sgt R. Mang had the port engine go u/s outbound, they bombed Emmerich and returned safely to base on one engine.
    Sgt G. Duffield and Sgt P. Heden were hit by flak, not serious.
    Sgt W. Grigg was hit by flak, the port engine was u/s and the antenna was shot off.
    All crews reported intense flak over the target.

    Sgt A. Steen, S/Ldr C. Dowie, F/Sgt H. Patch, and Sgt D. Lloyd from 426 Squadron all returned early due to severe icing.
    P/O W. Shaw returned early as the oxygen system was u/s, they landed safely at Coltishall.
    Sgt F. Dingwall returned early as the guns were u/s.
    Sgt S. Gaunt bombed a town in the Ruhr because the navigator was sick.
    F/Sgt R. Todd RCAF and crew, flying Wellington III  BJ-762 coded OW-O, failed to return from this operation.

    Sgt E. Williams was attacked by a JU-88, some hits were seen. It was claimed damaged.
    F/Sgt D. McFadden RCAF and crew, flying Wellington X  HE-744 coded ZL-J, failed to return from this operation.

    Sgt V. Sylvester was hit by flak, there were holes in the port wing. They landed safely at Coltishall.
    P/O P. Manning, F/O R. Tighe, and Sgt C. Pearce landed at Dalton on return.
    P/O L. Cartier RCAF and crew, flying Wellington III  BK-564 coded NA-R, failed to return from this operation.

    Sgt R. Ellison crash landed at Linton on Ouse on return. The crew was uninjured.

    Sgt A. Smith was attacked by a JU-88, it was seen to catch fire and explode.
    Sgt H. Sutterby was attacked by an enemy aircraft, there was no claim or damage.
    Sgt E. Aspden RAF and crew, flying Wellington X  HE-182 coded SE-A, failed to return from this operation.
