    99 Halifaxes from 408, 415, 420, 425, 426, 429, and 432 Squadrons were ordered to attack the oil refinery at Hemmingstedt. The crews were over the target at between 8,000 and 13,000 feet, releasing 594,000 lbs of high explosives. According to reports, bombing missed the target.

    F/Lt C. Pitu from 408 Squadron had the port outer go u/s outbound. They bombed the target and returned safely to base on 3 engines.
    P/O G. Daughters RCAF and crew, flying Halifax VII NP-718 coded EQ-B, failed to return from this operation.

    F/Lt H. Barr and crew from 429 Squadron, flying Halifax III LV-941 coded AL-V, were attacked by an unidentified single engine enemy aircraft, there was no claim or damage.
    F/O M. Ages and crew, flying Halifax III LV-942 coded AL-Q, were attacked by an ME-410, the fuselage was damaged and pilot’s window broken. Many strikes were seen on the ME-410.
    F/Lt D. Magee landed at Carnaby on return due to the brakes being u/s.
     
     

    While the Halifaxes went to Hemmingstedt, 81 Lancasters from 419, 424, 428, 431, 433 and 434 Squadrons were ordered on an attack at Dessau. The crews were over the target at between 14,000 and 16,500 feet, releasing 214,000 lbs of high explosives and 326,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, bombing was accurate and severe damage was done.

    F/Lt R. Haw from 431 Squadron was hit by flak, not serious. They landed at Boscombe Down on return due to a fuel shortage.
    F/Lt J. Duggan and crew, flying Lancaster X KB-802 coded SE-V, were attacked by an FW-190, some strikes were seen and it was claimed damaged. They were also hit with damages to the port inner nacelle and landing gear doors.

    P/O J. Farrell and crew from 433 Squadron, flying Lancaster I NG-493 coded BM-M, were attacked by a JU-88, there was no claim or damages. They landed at Ford on return due to a fuel shortage.

    F/Lt R. Fern and crew from 434 Squadron, flying Lancaster X KB-834 coded WL-Y, were attacked by a JU-88, it was claimed damaged after the gunners fired 700 rounds. They landed at Thorney Island due to a fuel shortage.
