19 Halifaxes from 408 and 419 Squadrons were joined by 51 Wellingtons
from 426, 428, 429, and 431 Squadrons on an attack at Duisberg. The crews
were over the target at between 13,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 70,000
lbs of high explosives and 153,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports,
the weather was clear and severe damage was caused to the port area and
industrial sector, including the Thyssen steel works.
Sgt D. Brooke from 408 Squadron returned early as the compasses were
u/s.
S/Ldr W. Newson returned early as the oxygen system was u/s.
Sgt J. McIntosh from 419 Squadron returned early as they were unable
to climb through the severe icing.
Sgt P. Johnson returned early as all the windows frosted over.
F/O W. Keddie and crew, flying Halifax II BB-376 coded VR-G, were attacked
by a unidentified aircraft, there was no claim or damage.
Sgt R. Harrison and crew flying Halifax II JB-929 coded VR-J were attacked
by an unidentified twin engine aircraft, the rear turret was damaged and
Sgt E. Morgans RCAF, the rear gunner, were injured.
