26 Halifaxes from 408 and 419 Squadrons were joined by 47 Wellingtons
from 426, 428, 429, and 431 Squadrons on an attack at Bochum. The crews
were over the target at between 12,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 113,000
lbs of high explosives and 138,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports,
the bombing was accurate with serious damage being caused.
F/Sgt J. Taylor from 408 Squadron returned early as the rear turret
was u/s.
Sgt D. Brooke and crew flying Halifax II DT-772 coded EQ-E were attacked
by an ME-109, there was no claim or damage.
F/Lt D. Harriss and crew flying Halifax II JB-969 coded EQ-D were attacked
by an ME-110, many strikes were seen on the fuselage and starboard engine,
it was seen to catch fire and dive to the ground.
F/Lt A. Mair and crew flying Halifax II JD-107 coded EQ-Y were attacked
by a JU-88, there was no claim or damage. They were also hit by flak, the
hydraulics were damaged.
F/O C. Smith was coned by search lites and flak, they dove down to
200 feet to escape. Sgt R. Elmes RAF, the mid upper gunner, bailed out
during this evasive action and was taken as a POW. The crew was able
to make it safely back to base.

Sgt J. McIntosh was attacked by an ME-110, there was no claim or damage.
