May 13/14, 1943

    26 Halifaxes from 408 and 419 Squadrons were joined by 47 Wellingtons from 426, 428, 429, and 431 Squadrons on an attack at Bochum. The crews were over the target at between 12,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 113,000 lbs of high explosives and 138,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, the bombing was accurate with serious damage being caused. 

    F/Sgt J. Taylor from 408 Squadron returned early as the rear turret was u/s. 
    Sgt D. Brooke and crew flying Halifax II DT-772 coded EQ-E were attacked by an ME-109, there was no claim or damage.
    F/Lt D. Harriss and crew flying Halifax II JB-969 coded EQ-D were attacked by an ME-110, many strikes were seen on the fuselage and starboard engine, it was seen to catch fire and dive to the ground. 
    F/Lt A. Mair and crew flying Halifax II JD-107 coded EQ-Y were attacked by a JU-88, there was no claim or damage. They were also hit by flak, the hydraulics were damaged.
    F/O C. Smith was coned by search lites and flak, they dove down to 200 feet to escape. Sgt R. Elmes RAF, the mid upper gunner, bailed out during this evasive action and  was taken as a POW. The crew was able to make it safely back to base. 
    S/Ldr. H. Campbell RAF and crew, flying Halifax II   JB-931 coded EQ-O, failed to return from this operation.

    Sgt C. Coutlee from 419 Squadron returned early as they were late getting away and would have been late over the target. 
    F/Lt W. Colledge returned early as the compasses were u/s. 
    F/O A. Quaile and F/O J. Tyler were hit by flak, not serious. 
    Sgt J. McIntosh was attacked by an ME-110, there was no claim or damage. 
    Sgt G. Adams RAF and crew, flying Halifax II   DT-672 coded VR-D, failed to return from this operation.

    Sgt L. Sutherland from 426 Squadron returned early as they were hit by flak. They landed safely at Catfoss. 
    Sgt S. Gaunt was hit by flak, not serious. 
    F/Lt J. Millward was hit by flak, stbd engine damaged. They landed safely at Coltishall.
    P/O J. Pettigrew RCAF and crew, flying Wellington X HE-243 coded OW-E, failed to return from this operation.

    Sgt R. Whitfield from 428 Squadron returned early with an electrical failure. They landed safely at Manston. 
    P/O A. Rielander and Sgt W. Pepper were attacked by ME-110s, there was no claim or damage. 
    Sgt F. Shelnutt landed at Bungay on return. 

    Sgt E. Eames from 429 Squadron returned early as the intercom was u/s. 
    F/Sgt F. Windibank RCAF and crew, flying Wellington X   LN-439 coded AL-N, failed to return from this operation.
