May 23/24, 1943



    28 Halifaxes from 408 and 419 Squadrons were joined by 63 Wellingtons from 426, 428, 429, 431, and 432 Squadrons on an attack at Dortmund. The crews were over the target at between 16,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 135,000 lbs of high explosives and 195,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, the weather was good and the target was severely damaged.

    F/O J. Colvin RCAF and crew from 408 Squadron, flying Halifax II   JB-841 coded EQ-K, failed to return from this operation.

    F/O C. MacIntosh from 419 Squadron returned early, as the intercom was u/s.
    Sgt P. Johnson returned early with a fuel problem.
    F/O P. Weedon RCAF and crew, flying Halifax II  BB-384 coded VR-L, crash landed at Dinsdale, 2 miles from base due to lack of fuel.

    W/O2 A. Green RCAF and crew, flying Halifax II  JB-862 coded VR-U, failed to return from this operation.

    6 crew were killed and one POW after being shot down by flak and a Nightfighter.

    Sgt C. Griffiths from 426 Squadron had an engine go u/s on return.. They landed safely at base on one engine.
    Sgt W. Dingley and crew flying Wellington X HE-866 coded OW-A were attacked by a JU-88, there was no claim or damage.
    Sgt S. Gaunt and crew, flying Wellington X  HE-995 coded OW-R, was hit by flak, there was severe damage to the fuselage and the Wellington caught fire. The crew was ordered to bail out. Sgt L. Fadden RCAF, the bomb aimer and W/O2 L. McCracken RCAF, the rear gunner bailed out, but after the escape hatch was opened the fire went out. They were then watched by an ME-110, but no attack was made. The crew crash-landed at Martlesham Heath with slight injuries to one crewmember.

    W/O2 L. Sutherland RCAF and crew, flying Wellington X  HE-281 coded OW-D, failed to return from this operation.

    All were killed.

    Sgt L. Southwood and Sgt J. Pendleton from 429 Squadron returned early with engine failures.
    F/Sgt K. Mills was hit by flak, not serious.
    Sgt R. Murray and crew, flying Wellington X HE-865 coded AL-A, were attacked by a JU-88, there was no claim or damage.

    F/Sgt P. Davis from 431 Squadron was attacked by an enemy aircraft, the bomb aimer, Sgt B. McConvell RAF, was slightly injured. The crew belly-landed at base without injuries.
    F/Lt C. Hall and crew, flying Wellington X  HE-198  coded SE-D, was coned by searchlights just after bombing and hit by flak. F/Lt Hall put the Wellington into a steep dive and then shouted on the intercom that he could not pull it out of a dive. Sgt Sloan, the bomb aimer helped pull the Wellington out of the dive. They were then coned by searchlights and hit by flak again. The Wellington went into a dive again and the Pilot said that we should bail out. After a quiet minute on the intercom the wireless operator went to the cockpit and found Sgt Sloan at the controls. The pilot and rear gunner had bailed out. Sgt Sloan headed the Wellington home where they were coned again by searchlights, but no flak. They crossed the coast and saw a lit airfield and were given permission to land. They landed without further incident at Cranwell. Sgt Sloan was awarded a CGM, F/O Bailey, the navigator, a DFC, and Sgt Parslow, the wireless operator, a DFM.

    Sgt A. Steen and F/O C. Hess from 432 Squadron returned early with technical problems.
    F/Sgt J. Thompson returned early with one engine u/s. 
    Sgt S. Atkinson returned early as the oxygen system was u/s.
    Sgt F. Dingwall was hit by flak, the navigator, Sgt L. Collins RCAF, was slightly injured.
    This was the first operation by 432 Squadron since forming at East Moor.
