October 5/6, 1944

    10 Halifaxes from 433 squadron were ordered on a mining operation to Heligoland. The crews were over the garden at 12,000 feet, sowing 40@1500 lb mines.

    F/Lt D. McGrath and crew, flying Halifax III MZ-807 coded BM-C, were attacked by an unidentified enemy aircraft. There was no claim or damage. They landed at Tholthorpe on return due to poor weather at base.
    F/O W. Watson and crew, flying Halifax III NP-944 coded BM-M, were attacked by a JU-88. P/O J. Zereikin RCAF, the rear gunner, was killed and the rear turret, fuselage and port wing were damaged. On the second pass, many strikes were seen in the cockpit, wing and engine area. The JU-88s wheels came down, it flipped on its back and dove vertically to the sea. It was claimed destroyed. The crew landed safely at Carnaby with of further damages.
    F/O J. Burch landed at Carnaby on return.
    F/O J. Egger, F/Lt P. Holmes, F/O R. Mountford, F/Lt C. Appleton, S/Ldr C. Marshall, F/O R. Russell, and F/O S. McKellar landed at Tholthorpe on return due to poor weather at base.
