July 30/31, 1943

    33 Halifaxes from 408, 419, 427, and 428 Squadrons were ordered on an attack at Remscheid. The crews were over the target at between 17,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 66,000 lbs of high explosives and 128,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, bombing was accurate and severe damage was caused.

    Sgt A.Chalk, RAF and crew, flying Halifax II  JD-365 coded EQ-J, from 408 Squadron failed to return from this operation.

    5 crew were killed and 2 were POWs. 

    F/Sgt B.Westerberg, RAAF and crew, flying Halifax V  EB-242 coded ZL-K, from 427 Squadron failed to return from this operation.

    The pilot was killed and the rest of the crew were POWs. 

    F/Sgt W. Armour from 428 Squadron returned early as one engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
