June 22/23, 1943

    25 Halifaxes from 408, 419, and 427 Squadrons were joined by 33 Wellingtons from 429, 431, and 432 Squadrons on an attack at Mulheim. The crews were over the target at between 15,000 and 22,000 feet, releasing 68,000 lbs of high explosives and 139,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, bombing was accurate and severe damage was caused.

    Sgt B. Mulligan from 408 Squadron returned early as the bomb aimer was sick.
    F/O C. Smith returned early as some instruments were u/s.

    F/Sgt F. Higgins from 427 Squadron returned early as the compasses were u/s.
    P/O B. Crew and S/Ldr C. Earthrowl were hit by flak, not serious.
    P/O G. Cadmus RCAF and crew, flying Halifax V  DK-139 coded ZL-P, failed to return from this operation.

    P/O K. Johnston from 429 Squadron returned early as the intercom was u/s and the rear gunner had frost bite.
    Sgt J. Pendleton returned early as one engine was u/s. They landed safely on one engine.
    F/Sgt T. Heyes was hit by flak, there were holes in the port wing.
    P/O W. Sneath RCAF and crew, flying Wellington X   HF-457 coded AL-H, failed to return from this operation.

    3 were killed and 2 taken as POWs when shot down by a Nightfighter.

    Sgt S. Atkinson from 432 Squadron was hit by flak, there were holes in the wings, fuselage and front turret.
    S/Ldr W. McKay returned early as the rear turret was u/s.
     

    As well as some crews going to Mulheim, 10 Halifaxes from 419 and 428 Squadrons were joined by 3 Wellingtons from 431 Squadron on a mining operation to the Frisian Islands. The crews were over the garden at between 2,000 and 4,000 feet, sowing 36@1500 lb mines.

     Sgt G. Neale from 419 Squadron returned without mining as they were unable to find the pinpoint.

    Sgt L. Williamson from 428 Squadron did not mine as the load hung up.

    All crews from 431 Squadron returned early, as their navigation aids were u/s.
