March 25/26, 1944



    9 Lancasters from 408 and 426 squadrons were joined by 63 Halifaxes from 419, 420, 424, 425, 427, 428, 429, 431, 432, and 434 squadrons on an attack of the rail yards at Aulnoye. The crews were over the target at between 7,000 and 8,500 feet, releasing 672,000 lbs of high explosives. According to reports, the target was not marked accurately and the attacked failed.

    P/O H. Eyjolfsson from 419 squadron, flying Halifax II   JP-125 coded VR-L, had 2 engines go u/s outbound. On return they overshot the runway at Ford and crashed. The crew was uninjured.

    F/Sgt N. Thompson from 429 squadron returned early as the stbd inner was u/s. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.

    S/Ldr C. Higgins from 431 Squadron had Air Vice Marshall “Black Mike McEwen” aboard as the second pilot.

    F/Sgt A. Spence from 434 squadron, flying Halifax V  LL-225 coded WL-L, was hit by something over the target. The stbd inner engine was u/s. They crash-landed at Friston. The crew was not injured.
