November 25/26, 1943
88 Halifaxes from 419, 427, 428, 429, 431, and 434 squadrons were ordered
on an attack at Frankfurt. The crews were over the target at between 18,000
and 22,000 feet, releasing 160,000 lbs of high explosives and 352,000 lbs
of incendiaries. According to reports, the target was cloud covered and
the attack was scattered with some damage.
Sgt G. Scade from 419 squadron returned without bombing as there were
attacked by enemy aircraft. The bomb doors were damaged, perspex nose gone,
undercarriage doors, stbd wing, stbd inner and port rudder were holed.
All the navigation instruments were u/s.
W/O2 J. Morrison was attacked by an enemy aircraft, there was no claim
or damage. They also saw 6 Fortresses over the North Sea with their navigation
lights on.
F/Sgt I. Johnson was hit by flak, not serious. They landed at Dunsfold
on return.
Sgt J. Quinn was followed by an FW-190, no shots were fired. They landed
at Dunsfold on return.
Sgt R. Thompson could not find a place to land on return. They went
to Finningley, Bottesford and finally landed at Wymeswold with about 5
minutes of fuel left.
F/O R. Lacerte from 427 squadron returned early as the pilot’s escape
hatch blew off.
Sgt C. Coathup returned early as the port outer was u/s. They landed
safely at base on 3 engines.
F/O F. Murray landed at Marston Moor on return due to a fuel shortage.
F/Sgt D. Curley from 428 squadron returned early as the stbd outer was
u/s. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
F/Sgt H. Pattinson returned without bombing as they were attacked by
an enemy fighter, the electrical system was damaged.
W/O2 W. Forsberg had the port outer go u/s on return. They landed safely
on 3 engines at Dunsfold.
F/O A. Day-Winter landed at Dunsfold on return.
S/Ldr J. Beggs RCAF–POW and crew, flying Halifax V LK-969 coded NA-G,
failed to return from this operation.
