November 26/27, 1943


    39 Lancasters from 408, 426, and 432 squadron were ordered on an attack at Berlin. The crews were over the target at between 17,000 and 23,000 feet, releasing 140,000 lbs of high explosives and 46,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, the weather was good and serious damage was caused to the industrial sectors in the west part of the city.

    F/O R. Clark from 408 squadron returned early as the compasses were u/s.
    P/O S. Laine was hit by flak, not serious.
    P/O L. Hansen had the rear turret go u/s on return.
    P/O E. Kearl had the port inner go u/s over the target. They landed safely at Chedburgh on 3 engines.
    F/Sgt R. Lloyd RCAF and crew, flying Lancaster II DS-712 coded EQ-G, had the stbd outer u/s before the target. Over the target they were hit by flak and Sgt M. Robert RCAF, the rear gunner was injured. On return they were attacked by a JU-88 were they were damaged again. Over England the stbd inner went u/s.

    They belly-landed near Lincoln without any further injuries.

    All were lost without a trace.

    P/O M. Shaw from 426 squadron returned early as the oxygen system was u/s.
    P/O D. Berry returned early as the navigation aids were u/s.
    P/O F. Stuart returned early as the rear turret was u/s.
    P/O W. Griffin was attacked by a JU-88, there was no claim or damage.
    S/Ldr A. Hughes RCAF and crew, flying Lancaster II DS-679 coded OW-R, failed to return from this operation.

    All were lost without a trace.

    F/Sgt P. Dennis from 432 squadron was attacked 3 times by enemy aircraft, there were no claims or damage.
     

    While the Lancasters went to Berlin, 56 Halifaxes from 419, 427, 428, 429, 431, and 434 squadrons were ordered on an attack at Stuttgart. The crews were over the target at between 10,000 and 22,000 feet, releasing 106,000 lbs of high explosives and 219,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, this attack was scattered with little damage.

    F/O R. Boe from 419 squadron returned early as the radios were u/s and the mid upper gunner was sick.
    F/Sgt D. MacLean landed at Bradwell Bay on return.
    F/Sgt S. Clarke RCAF and crew, flying Halifax II LW-242 coded VR-N, failed to return from this operation.

    P/O G. Weldon landed at Dunsfold on return.
    Sgt G. Toal landed at Holmsley South on return.

    F/O C. Ford from 428 squadron landed at East Moor on return.
    F/O F. Watkins and F/Sgt K. Hawthorn landed at Dunsfold on return due to a fuel shortage.
    F/O M. Kogan landed at ford on return due to a fuel shortage.
    F/Sgt R. Buck RAF and crew, flying Halifax II JN-966 coded NA-V, collided with a Lancaster from 103 squadron over Middleton St. George.

    All were killed.

    P/O H. Mitchell from 429 squadron had the port outer go u/s outbound. They bombed from a low altitude and returned safely on 3 engines.
    F/O J. Atkins landed at Westcott on return.
    F/Sgt P. Charlebois RCAF and crew, flying Halifax II JD-164 coded AL-K, were hit by flak. The port outer was u/s.

    On return they overshot Thorney Island twice and ditched in the water, the crew was not injured.

    F/Sgt E. Baker RCAF and crew, flying Halifax II JD-333 coded AL-W, had the port outer go u/s after takeoff. The port inner was also not making full power. On approach the stbd inner caught fire and was put out.

    They crash landed at Snape Mires without injuries to the crew.

    F/Sgt M. McMillan, F/O G. Philbin and F/O R. Rubie from 431 squadron landed at East Moor on return due to fuel shortages.
    P/O R. Hamby landed at Thorney Island on return.

    P/O J. Snelgrove from 434 squadron returned early as the port outer was u/s. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    F/O D. Evans and F/Sgt W. McQueen landed at Thorney Island on return.
    F/Sgt D. Morrison landed at Bourne on return.
