September 6/7, 1943


    38 Halifaxes from 419, 427, 428, and 434 Squadrons were joined by 5 Lancasters from 426 squadron on an attack at Munich. The crews were over the target at between 17,000 and 21,000 feet, releasing 95,000 lbs of incendiaries and 94,000 lbs of high explosives. According to reports, the target was cloud covered and bombing was not concentrated.

    F/Lt A. Quaile and F/O J. Westland from 419 Squadron returned early as their intercoms were u/s. They landed at Tangmere.
    All the other crews landed at Tangmere or Ford on return due to poor weather at base.

    F/Lt A. Hughes from 426 Squadron returned early after they were hit by flak. 
    Sgt J. Brown was fired upon by a Halifax over the target. There were a few bullet holes in the tail.
    All other crews landed at Ford or Manston on return due to poor weather at base.

    Sgt R. Deegan from 427 Squadron returned early as the rear turret was u/s.
    F/Sgt J. Milton and F/O G. Cribb returned early as their port outers were u/s. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    F/Sgt W. Caldwell returned early as they were unable to climb.
    F/Lt D. Arnot and P/O W. Weston landed at Manston on return due to poor weather at base.
    F/O E. Pery-Knox-Gore RAF and crew, flying Halifax V DK-255 coded ZL-B, failed to return from this operation.

     F/Sgt W. Kruse from 428 Squadron returned early as the stbd inner was u/s. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    Sgt N. Neilson returned early as the pilot was sick.
    W/O A. Harrison was attacked by an enemy aircraft. Their hydraulics were damaged.
    Sgt W. Brown RCAF and crew, flying Halifax V DK-196 coded NA-Z, failed to return from this operation.

    P/O S. Dunn returned early as the oxygen system and hydraulics were u/s.
    2nd/Lt J. Clary returned early as the Flt/engineer, Sgt F. Hayes RCAF, was sick, they landed at Ford.
    Sgt D. Morrison was attacked by an enemy aircraft, the rear turret was damaged, fuel tanks, fuselage holed and rear gunner, Sgt. J. Boucher RCAF, was injured. they landed safely at Ford without further incident.
    P/O F. Carter and F/Lt J. Hockey landed at Ford on return.
    F/Sgt J. Tovey RCAF and crew, flying Halifax V DK-251 coded WL-F, failed to return from this operation.
