"RCAF WW11 AIRCREW MEMBER COMING TO
CFB GREENWOOD, NOVA SCOTIA"

The following article was provided by Maj. (Ret'd) C. J. Dunbar, President of The AirCrew Memorial Association:

The AirCrew Memorial Association is a unit of the Western Nova Scotia Branch of the Aircrew Association. We were incorporated under The Societies Act of Nova Scotia and, as such, have been granted status as a registered charity by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency.

Our mission is to erect a Memorial statue to honour the memory of Canadians who have served their country as Aircrew of the Armed Services of Canada and its Allies. Over 25,000 Aircrew went overseas during WW11 and approximately 17,000 of those gave their lives in the cause of freedom. We have initiated the casting of a six foot life size bronze statue of a generic WW11 Aircrew member. Mr. Peter Bustin, who sculpted the Sailor monument located next to Summit Place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has been chosen as our sculptor. The accompanying photograph is of the miniature created by Mr. Bustin.

The statue will be erected at the new Military Aviation Museum at CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia. Our statue will be the centre piece of that museum which will house many military artifacts as well as an Anson aircraft. The Anson will be reconstructed in a portion of the Museum which will permit viewing by the public while the work is in progress. Outside the museum building there will be several aircraft on display including a Lancaster, an Argus, a Neptune, a Canso, and hopefully a Hudson. This setting will be very appropriate for our statue of the WW11 RCAF Aircrew member. He will be surrounded by aircraft and equipment that he was associated with during that war.

To complete our project we will require approximately $70,000. We are hopeful that this amount of money will be acquired by generous donations from the many aviation minded people who will become aware of this very important project. To that end we will be contacting many military organizations, aviation related corporations and the producers of military aviation magazines and periodicals to assist us in completing out mission. All donations, be they of small or large amounts, will assist us in our mission of erecting a Memorial statue. Money received in excess of our target will be used to fund an annual scholarship in aviation related studies. Income tax receipts will be issued.

The Executive of The AirCrew Memorial Association are: Cy Dunbar, President; Aubrey Sutherland, Vice President; Dave Waterbury, Secretary; Roy Loomer, Treasurer.

We hope that many of you who are made aware of this important project will be able to provide some financial assistance. Donations and inquiries should be directed to:
